Introduction
My name is Andrea Baumgartner and I am a final year Latin language student at the University of Queensland. ANCH3570: Culture, Identity and Power in the Ancient World, is the last subject which I need to complete for my Diploma in Arts (Latin Major).
I have long been fascinated with ancient Latin texts and their authors, in particular Cicero and Vergil. So, when I was presented with an opportunity to study Latin online at UQ back in 2020, I seized the moment with great enthusiasm. I am also an aspiring home librarian with a penchant for learning, particularly the Romantic languages, hence my focus on Latin.
Outside my pastime of being a ‘covert Latin student’, I am a practicing lawyer, based in Melbourne. I have 2 beautiful children, aged 9 and 7, and a wonderfully supportive husband, each of whom have played a special role as I have pursued my ‘Latin for Leisure’ interest.
This website will showcase some of the academic writing work and assessment pieces which I completed as a part of this subject.
My Goals and Future Plans
My near-term study goal is to complete my Diploma in Arts in Semester 2 of 2025 and graduate in July 2026. When I enrolled in the course in Semester 1 of 2020, I did not know where my Latin studies would take me beyond it satisfying a simple passion and interest area. Five years later, I am eager to continue studying Latin and Ancient History and to share this with other classical language and ancient history fans.
With this in mind I am currently contemplating and evaluating how I can continue to fuel, what seems like an insatiable appetite for not only Latin but Ancient History studies in 2026 and beyond.
